Electric fence is good and no-one actually gets injured with one. My OH should know as he keeps forgetting ours is switched on! It does give a shock though and would make someone shout if they touched it and if they have a ferret with them it won't go near twice. I hope you get whoever it was Matthew. Hopefully after being chased by the dog they won't be back anyway.

Matthew I'm so sorry to read that you've been targeted yet again!!!! The low-life scumbags, ooooooooooooo words fail me!! They really do. I'm not a dog-lover at all, but well done your dog for scaring them off, it's a pity he didn't manage to nip their bums.
Electric fencing sounds good, and the warning signs should cover you legally too. Please get the police involved, even if they're slow to do anything, the report should be kept on record for future reference (which hopefully won't be needed!) Don't give up though, you'll really miss not having your girls aroundMy girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

How upsetting . Please get the police and RSPCA involved cos they will prosecute. Someone had a duck taken and tortured from our lotties and after the same thing happened to some geese on another site the police caught them and they are being prosecuted by police and RSPCA. in the meantime good luck with the booby traps.S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig

That is so sad, what a fab doggie you have though.
Hope it doesn't happen again. Take care. When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown

Just wondered..........how did they get the padlock off, did they have a key? If not they would have had to make a lot of noise! Don't understand why there was a small hole in the fence AND the lock was removed?

Matthew mate,I've only just read this.So sorry for you.
Having had the pleasure of meeting Max I can say he's one gorgeous dog....but I'd certainly be thinking twice about coming back if I'd seen his angry side!
You really should get the police involved, lottie break ins maybe low on their list of priorities, but hopefully the fact it was on your property they'll take things a little more seriously.
Hope you manage to get to the bottom of it and can get back to enjoying your chooks without the worry of it happening again.the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Snadger - The padlock from one of our outbuildings was removed, not the lock from the chook shed. The fence was twisted apart and something was put in.
Not really sure what's going on. It might be a jealous ar*ehole or could be just a random thing... It has happened once, and now again... The policeman said he has dealt with a lot of similar things in the last few months, since the nights have been dark early... so not really sure what to think.
They are coming out to look at the outbuildings and surrounding area but they're not really interested in the chooks ;-(

I hope they don't come back, sounds like it was attempted theft, I'd definitely go the leccie fence route.Hayley B

Sensor lights are very good. Switch them on when you are not in and out of the garden and then the dog will not think of them as normal and hopefully you can see out into the garden before having to switch the lights on (giving the intruder a sign that they have disturbed you). Letting the neighbours know that someone has been snooping in the out building will also encourage them to keep their eyes open too.
We have had things like this happen in the past, 3 days after bring a mare back from stud some nice person took the gate off its hinges (otherside was padlocked) and let all the horses out -this was done during the day and we were on site! The horses got themselves in a hell of a state and the mare absorbed the foal.
You just have to pick youself up, dust your self off and keep going.
