  • Scarlet poorly again!

scarlet is eggbound;(my diagnosis, two days no egg found huddled in run looking miserable) have bathed her in warm water twice (in my bath)and gently massaged vent with bit of vaseline, vent now visible was not even a tiny hole to see when i first looked, she's in a box of straw in my warm bathroom, shall i leave her there all night or return her to Mr D?? how many warm baths should i do? the vent is 'winking' she seems to be straining sometimes, she seems very full under the vent, what should i do next? don't want to loose her, ps she's eating worms and dropping off to sleep when i stroke her neck...
she's laid!! and gone back to Mr D, god, I feel so relieved and so pleased with the advice you gave me last time, so big Thankyou! as it was great knowing what to do!!

Well done! It is a great feeling when they lay after your TLC!

I have to say, the advice of a warm bath for your chicken paid off for my souffle when I first got her and she has been my best layer and best character since.

So thank you for me (even though I thanked at the time) the forum saved my souffle big time!

no egg since that last one in the bathroom scarlet looks miserable, is free ranging but laying down quite often, her tail is pointing down. If no egg tomorrow then I'll repeat the warm bath, BUT surely this shouldn't be an on going problem??? what could be wrong with her? I'm seriously thinking about giving up on keeping hens..i think i must be doing something wrong and it's really worrying me that she's so unhappy

Mr. Darcy isn't making her sore by being over-attentive is he?
Can you smear a little vaseline around her vent to see if this helps her expel an egg?

yes it's possible that he is causing problems i guess, she's still his only wife due to thefact that we still don't have a bigger hen house i've got two choices for a temporary solution, i could either get just one more which is all i could fit into my little chicken tractor, or i could get a few more more and pop them all into my little piggery which is a little stone built lean to onto our house, it would be sheltered and dog and fox free but couldn't guarantee it being rat or weasel proof, we don't have a weasel in the eves at present to my knowledge but there is the odd rat that escape my cat's beedy eyes. i could try to get the house finished during the next week, it might be long winded as it looks like i'll be doing it and i'm not mega-talented but what would any of you choose as a temporay solution,
ps will bath and vaseline tomorrow! poor scarlet!

FWIW, I'd get as many laydees as can happily fit into your piggery. Before they take up residence have the cat and dog locked in there for long enough for each of them to pee and poo to leave scent to discourage the rats and also leave poisoned baited traps for the rats.

You can allow the dog and cat to 'refresh' their scent inside and outside when the chooks are otherwise engaged as a further discouragement to foxes and ratses.

Your current chicken tractor can be used as a hospital/sin bin.

                  Wow, you're difficult to persuade

In the meantime, put a chastity belt on poor little Scarlet

she's ok, pecking about, just finishing mucking out the children () then it'll be ponies, then i'm going to sort out the piggery for the arrival of the harem!
