  • Too many eggs!!!!!

I have got eggs coming out of my ears!

The dozen that had cracked in the honesty box got mashed up with mixed corn and layers and were given back to the chooks.
I'm getting about a dozen eggs a day but judging by there combs about 18 chooks are laying?
Today I visited one of the nestboxes i thought they'de stopped using to to find about 30 eggs stacked on top of each other and some of them were frozen.
I've broken these into a bucket and also about 18 I had in the shed which i wasn't too sure about.
Next time I light my woodburner I'm going to make a massive pan of scrambled eggs to feed back to them!

In the meantime I've brought every egg I have home so they don't freeze and have about 4 dozen in the house. OH is making egg intensive recipes as we speak!

I think I've bitten off more than I can chew as my thirty chooks are going through 2 1/2 bags of fed per week and I appear to be averaging 18 to 20 eggs per day.
No one is attending the allotments because of the snow and anyway, I can't leave them there because they are freezing and cracking.

I think I must be feeding the damm things too well as some of them are four years old and shouldn't really be laying at all!
Its an awful thing to say, but how can I stop them laying!

I think I've read if you give them corn instead of layers ration that'll put them off laying if you really want them to slow down?
Having the same problem myself as OH is off work following his heart surgery and most of our excess go to people where he works! The newest ex-batts have feathered up and they're all laying now too.

        they need to go broody!

TBH...you should be really proud of your gals

Nigella freeges her yolks and her whies doesn't she?...or have tou already doe that?
Could you nip around a few corner shops with them- my mom said her Tescos had sold out of eggs- or give a few to your local church to pass around to a few elderly peeps. You're going to need to feed the gals whatever ( or eat the older ones in a slow stew)...tis a pity to waste the eggs

I'm getting a backlog of eggs too!!! I'm averaging about 8 a day but my "regular customers" seem to be staying at home and not venturing on my very slippy path I've already made a dozen cakes and a batch of ice cream in the last couple of days, I've put some egg whites in the freezer, sent a dozen over to eldest daughter, and still got 2 dozen in the kitchen! think I'll just "have" to make some chocolate fondants

Have you got a branch of night watch near you or can you find someone from the sally army, the WRVS or the WI - any of these would love your spare eggs and they will be used well and appreciated by the recipients. Your local church should be able to put you in touch with some or all of these.

Alternatively, meringues, ice cream, sorbets, cakes (you can freeze most types) separate and freeze the yolks and whites.
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

Can you sell a few somewhere else?
Home gate? Neighbours? Local school? Work? Friends and friends of friends?

I had 6 today from 6 hens - first time for a full house since getting the new girls.

Ha nope- the keys are getting gunked up with the lead paint dust I'm scrubbing off the interior stone walls!
I have to jab hard on the keys to get them to work- a bit like on my mom's old typewriter!!!!

So why aren't our local provider's chickens laying? Getting eggs is a lottery each week as we are 20 miles from the shops! I thought they stopped laying at this time of year anyway?
