  • Frozen eggs, safe to eat?

    Hi guys

My girls, bless them are still laying a few, although by the time I get to them the shell is cracked (not the membrane) and they are pretty much frozen. Are they still safe to eat for humans and if not would they be ok to cook and feed back to girls?

I wouldn't eat them, but would probably cook and feed back to the girls or the cats....

I wouldn't fancy eating them but I've fed 4 dozen back to the chooks mixed with corn and pellets. They appear to luv em and they should give them a protein boost!

Gave my girls a couple of boiled eggs tonight for their tea for the first time. They wolfed it down.

I always scramble any eggs I'm giving to the chooks as it's too hard getting the shells off fresh boiled eggs. One of my old girls lays eggs without the shell and only covered by the membrane. The temperature in the nest box is staying above freezing so haven't had any freeze yet.

They will be perfectly safe for humans to eat. If they are frozen there is no chance of any nasties incubating anyway, especially if they are freshly laid eggs that day.

I remember eggs freezing in the pantry when I was a kid. We could not afford to throw them out so they got eaten. We suffered no ill effects from this.

If the egg is new, and the shell pretty clean, no problem (but don't try to boil it).
I would use a frozen egg as soon as it thawed, but otherwise, what's the difference? You crack the shells when you use them! The only concern would be if the shell was dirty where it was cracked, that I would feed to animals (including chooks) after cooking.

I'd use them too - but preferable on the same day - scrambled or in a cake.

I wish I had found this thread before I ditched the 4 frozen / cracked eggs I recovered from the nestbox this morning (-11C had something to do with it), oh well next time......

I freeze my spring summer glut for when thenights are long, and freezing will kill most pathogens

I froze my summer glut but still am getting lots of fresh eggs so there has been no need to use them!

If you boil them up for the hens there is no need to get the shell off, I just mash the lot up, shell and all.

Am I to assume that freezing eggs just entails bunging them in the freezer as they are?

                              No !

I seperate beat the eggs lightly and freeze them in silicon cup cake moulds then bag them up. for me this equates to about one duck egg per hole in the mould, but it is best to check this for you eggs & moulds. I used to seperate and pour into ice cube bags it is Ok but a bit of a faff IMHO. both preparation & use wise
