  • Cage Ban and food labelling (EDM 234/239)

    Hi All,

I thought this may have been posted somewhere but couldnt find it, so I thought you would be interested in seeing it.

Many who read the facebook BHWT forum will know about it and also those that get the BHWT newsletter, for those that dont, here is the link

    VerticalResponse

I wrote to Dan Rogerson MP, (got a copy of a letter from Gaynor at BHWT) and this morning got a response from my MP, saying he had signed both EDM's 234 & 239 he has also written to Jim Fitzpatrick MP Minister at the department for environment, food and rural affairs to urge the government to act on both of these issues

This is good news and if we all ask our MPS to sign these, if the caged ban does not go ahead as previously agreed, then perhaps there will be more support for British farmers in at least knowing where our eggs are coming from and help them more to enriched cages if not free range

If you need a copy of the letter, PM me as I can send it to you. I emailed my copy to thr MP, saving paper/stamp!

On the same note I was having a discussion with my butcher who is also a farmer and he tells me that the egg producers in this area are investing heavily in "free range" equipment so let's hope this is happening elsewhere.

the biggest issue for UK farmers, is that even if they go free range, egg producers in India, Europe etc that dont have the welfare standards that we have here will slowly start to supply to our markets

This is already happening in pre packed food, where say dried eggs are used, these could be from china, india or anywhere - if this continues then it will surely put our farmers out of business

this is why this labeling is so important as it means we will know where the egg content is derived from and can make an informed choice

if the cage ban comes in, it will still mean that caged hen eggs could still be bought into the UK from romania for instance and at the moment we wont know that

This is my understanding, but I could be way off the mark

You are right tlck9. This does and will continue to happen. We all need to be carefull about what we buy and where it comes from. The label does not always tell the full story !
However we are a caring bunch on the vine and we need to lead the way by making a stand and telling people the truth about what they eat and actively campaigning to change things !
        Just my opinion
