As you may remember I have no chooks of my own but occassionally search and post questions on behalf of my neighbour.I'm really happy to carry on doing chook research for her especially sinc she has no access to a pc. She is in her early 70's and says she isnt into computers. I would like to buy her a book on keeping chooks but don't know where to start. I have been passing on all the articles in GYO and she has found them useful. I just thought she might like to put her feet up on a rainy night and have a browse at her leisure. I will of course continue to post on her behalf too. Quite enjpying learning bits and bobs.
Can any of you reccomend a good book on the subject? She has several ex batteries and has also recently hatched some handsome guys and girls who are doing well.
    Many thanks again
    Donna

Katie Thear has written several books about keeping poultry, all of which will make good reading. There is also Practical Poultry magazine (available from most newsagents these days). The editor, Chris Graham, has also produced a book called Choosing and Keeping Chickens which is full of good advice and has some lovely photos of different breeds.

I adore Francine Raymonds books...if your friend's already got chooks, then probably 'The Big Book of Garden Hens' would be best.

The Urban Hen by Paul Peacock - a great book for garden chicken keepers its more modern than a lot of them. Not too indepth for a back yard keeper but all teh right type of information.

Paul has written a lot of good books actually, most of them relating to the "urban smallholder"

Thankyou all! As usual first class info and quick responce. Think I may buy her one to start, and then maybe a trip to the library is in order! Shes been so generous with the eggs and chicking poop that I just want to pay her back and surprise her really. I actually really like the sound of the chooks over the fence and yes even the couple of cockerals shes got!

              Thankyou again, really apprciated

For me, Katie Thear is to chicken keeping as Delia is to cookery. Information spot on, easy to follow, and no fussy nonsense.
To the best of my knowledge Katie has never been on TV, so got no idea whether she would be irritating in that situation....

Thanks PB, plumped for this one in the end. Difficult to choose when you cant see them, but I thought she would enjoy reading this. Can I just check re the recipes, are they egg recipes as Avril is a vege and has no intention of eating her chooks! Should have checked this before ordering it, doh! Too late now!

Thanks again everyone. Im sure she'll appreciate it especilly on a cold wet night.

                  Many thanks again x

Gave Avril her book today, she loved it! Will give her a list of the other books too so she can have a look at her local library for them.
                    Thanks so much
