Oooh, getting 6 more girls tomorrow!

Just spoke to a lady who has 6 girls she wants rid of, due to moving house. I'm going to pick them up tomorrow, not sure exactly what they are as they told me they were Welsummers and then Rhode Islands Reds. They weren't even sure what they had been feeding them, from pellets to mash and bird seed?????? Will let you all know tomorrow and will post some piccies! Sounds to me like they have got some hens and now don't like the idea of looking after them.

Hi Shirl, I know exciting but nervous as I don't know what state they are in, I asked a few questions and they just wanted rid, they couldn't answer my questions really and they were only basic ones! Going to leave by 9 in the morning so they should be with us back here by 10.30 latest. Going to give them a thorough check before introducing them to the girls!!! Should be fun! Glad I can give them a home if they are not wanted!

If possible, try to wait till bedtime to introduce them. I have found that to be the most stress-free time as they all buzz off to roost instead of squabbling

Mrs C - By all means take them on, as they are obviously not wanted at their current home, but be aware they may probably be "below par" for a variety of reasons. They may even be ill which is why current owner wants rid. People are very keen to move on chooks that they think are going to start costing them money (same as old horses, dogs and cats). If you can, house them temporarily somewhere for a few days before mixing them with your existing birds so you can observe them, listen to breathing, take account of any snotty noses, coughs etc and check/treat for lice. Also worm them as chances are this won't have been done.

Hi guys, well I've got the girls. They weren't kept in the best of conditions unfortunately. Open run, no straw, poor housing (plastic box type things.) They look like Warrens to me, but are small in my opinion. No corn given just mash. They were literally open to the elements and with the bad weather no wonder they don't look their best. They need feeding up etc. No perches in run either. They seem happen enough here flying upto the roosting bar in the main run and feeding and drinking. No big squabbles the usual really. I am having one of those 'panic' moments now though and hope all will be ok. I couldn't leave them there.
