  • My fridge has been taken over

Ever since I got my girls I've noticed that my fridge is always full. Why? It's always got cooked leftovers/treats etc for my girls.

It currently has a large container of cooked "pot herbs" (ready chopped veggies you usually make into a stew), 3 bananas, 2 apples, a container of sultanas soaking in water, half a cabbage, two very large leeks (the girls will have the bits we don't eat) cooked pasta, and an open tin of sweetcorn.

Have your girls taken over your fridge too?

Not my fridge at any rate, unless you count eggs when the girls are laying, have been known to have whole fridge shelf full!

I have a big old stock pot left on top of the cooker where peelings and leftovers get put. When its about halfway full it gets cooked up into a mash for the ladies. I'll give them anything to eat except leftover chicken. They always scarf the lot down. Its also my jam pan, so when preserving time comes round, it gets a real good scrub.

Chicks have currently taken over living room

I'm a meanie when it comes to treats. I give them cabbage or other greens - home grown when I have it but at times I'm reduced to buying stuff for them. I also occasionally (in the bad weather) open a tin of cheapo own-brand sweet corn and give them a slack handful a day. Otherwise it's a handful of grit, one of corn and a few mealworms at bedtime. I don't give them carbs, as I know a lot of people do. I don't think they need them. And I don't give them cooked stuff. Hard biddy, me.
However, they appear to be in the pink and are laying one a day. Can't grumble (even if they do!)

Before we became so affluent and the EEC and DEFRA got involved, most chooks were kept purely on household scraps and nothing else.

Times have changed now though and we are forced to only feed our chooks with either pellets or corn and no household scraps

Not wanting to fall fowl (sic) of DEFRA, my official stance is I only feed pellets and corn! Allegedly!

I have a pot of scraps & peelings in the fridge for the guinea pigs: the parrots tend to eat whatever I'm having (usually rice/spud/noodles with veggies).

The problem is Mr TS ... he's such a fussy eater

...do the French farmers know about this????

I'm constantly bewildered by rules and regs- I'm sure a lot of them needed to be introduced to try and cope with the problems caused by overcrowding.

I've shown this to my girls and they say coz the eggs are for me and Mr DDL then its OK to have scraps and treats.
PS I forgot to mention the bag of porridge oats on top of the fridge!
