Salmonella ??

I have found someone with some buff orps at last (about 10 miles from me ) so plan is two orps and two bluebelles

Hens haven't been vaccinated for salmonella ...Thoughts please

A lot of pure breeds aren't vaccinated. Flocks can be Salmonella tested if you intend to become a commercial egg producer, but it's not necessary for the average backyard keeper.

There is a good site called urban chickens, google it. It's quite new and good for chicken advice but for all your GYO needs this is the place to be. But for a new place to pop in to its quite good.

How do girls get salmonella and what do you need to look out for ????

The vast majority of chickens contain salmonella in one degree or another (even vaccinated ones!), it generally does not affect the chickens one little bit but it is why we are encouraged to cook eggs and chicken properly.

vaccinations are neither here nor there, the vaccine does not stop salmonella it just increases a birds resistance to it and stops "shedding" ie transfering the disease to you via the eggs and poop, it is also not effective against all of the strains - by far the best way to combat salmonella is good hygenie and husbandry.

Breeders vaccinate to combat public perceptions of salmonella and chickens - the benefits certainly to not justify the cost.

Your choice in chickens sounds perfect for your situation and I'm glad you have managed to find a breeder - enjoy them they are great and mildly addictive - but its ok you are a member of chookoholics annoymous now!!
