You appear to have the same type of incubator as I do! Which reminds me , I must go to Inshops and buy an under bed storage unit to make into a brooder!

I have a large dog cage approximately 2 foot 6 inches wide X 3 foot long and 2 foot high.

It folds away flat and I used it last year for letting the chicks out on the lawn.
I won't use it in the initial stages but may use it later on!

Well to say I'm disappointed with the hatching this time is a bit of an understatement 2 Croad Langshans have hatched, the first 1 (in previous pictures) has badly splayed legs and what looks like a deformed foot, so it's got them hobbled and I'm hoping that will be sorted out in a day or so. The other, hatched late last night is very tiny (compared to number 1) and seems quite weak, though it does stand up sometimes and cheeps. No sign of anything else happening in the incubator, though it's Day 22 and things could still happen. I'll candle again tonight but I'm not holding my breath!

That's a shame Mo. I guess it's one of the problems of ebay eggs. I was lucky with one lot of mine but the other 6 were clear at 7 and 10 days. The seller has offered to replace them though. There are quite a few breeders in this area but no one had what i wanted so no choice really.

Meet Claudia and Coriander

An update After a tricky start, lots of tlc and attention, hobbling of legs etc, meet my two babies. Claudia is the biggest and she(he?) had really badly splayed legs and I hobbled her (him) till yesterday. Coriander had most of her (his) yolk sac not absorbed at hatching so was kept separate from the other one till it had dried up. She's (he's) still got a dried up lump on her tummy, but I'm sure that'll drop off eventually when the proper feathers come through. They're 6 days old today and I'm sooooooooooooooooo chuffed with them!

Well done Maureen for persevering. They look quite perky. I'm not sure I would have been so patient.

I'm sure you already know, but whatever sex they turn out to be, don't be tempted to breed from them. It's never advisable to breed from something that started out as a weakling.

Thanks Richmond, I think these'll be my "pets" (or pests if they crow ). I've just got some more eggs from a different breeder so fingers crossed for the next 3 weeks

Maureen what lovely pics, have just nearly finished making my homemade incubator so I'm going for it, just need a temperature/hygrometer thingy. Will be on here asking loads of advice, so beware!

If it's not one thing it's another with these chicks!!! First, my "dangle the ring" didn't work this time and Claudia is actually Claude He's the one with a wonky leg and thanks to Mike and Jennie, we did manage to get him strapped up. However, he was so distressed for 3 days, only being able to bounce around (backwards!), knocking water and food all over the place, that I've released his leg now and even though it's still a bit wonky, he can at least stand up on both feet, eat, drink etc. Now the other one has decided she likes the taste of him and has attacked his head He's got a sore bald patch that's now been sprayed with anti-peck spray and purple spray. I don't think I'm going down this hatching at home route again (well we'll see if any of the ones in the incubator right now hatch at the weekend) it's all far too stressful
