      My cats are useless then...we have three!! and thirty thousand rats!! (ok, so I'm exaggerating, but it feels like that many!!)
      I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!

        I know the sonic ones certainly work with mice-but one thing I'm wondering is if the chooks could hear it too???
        If they can, then it'd drive them mad listening to it all the time

          OK- done some Googling....

          ultra sound is above 20,000Hz

          human hearing range = 20 - 20,000 Hz
          Hearing range - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

          hen = 60 - 2,000 Hz
          Chicken Sense

          rat = 200 - 90,000 Hz
          What do rats hear?

          mouse
          = 1,000 - 90,000 Hz

          OK- so presuming that's the case - the ultrasonic devises ( 42,000Hz) should be fine with the chooks!

            Our cats are also useless (we also have three, although one is a geriatric so she's excused). They just don't seem to want to hunt rats. They come back with voles, mice and birds quite happily. I don't think they are put off by size either. My young male dragged an adult partridge through the cat flap the other morning and shredded it all over the kitchen floor, which I found when I got up, and that was bigger than a rat. We have also dangled live rats in traps in front of their noses before now, to try and excite them, but they just walk off in disgust.

              I've not seen any rats near our chooks- perhaps it's the electric fence??

              One of my cats used to chase anything for fun and one day came in with a huge cut in his nose- a pefect rat bite size...he was really sorry for himself for days afterwards until the swelling went down and it healed. Left a nasty scar on his little nose though!
              Don't think he'd try that again!

                  We have rats in our compost heap and the traps I have put down in there are not touched. Our cat has killed one but there are more !

                  No sign aroun the chickens and I don't really want to use poison as there are cats , owls etc.

                  tunnel trap and terriers next - cockers and a Doberman aren't really ratters

                      We build little 'houses' out of bricks with a tunnel inside - very small opening - and the poison inside, it does keep them down

                              I've just this evening fitted a sonic rat repellant. Cost me 15 squid plus 2 squid for the battery so it had better flaming work.

                              I'll keep you informed!

                                Hi there not sure if your aware but traps need to have the newness & or human smell worn off. My OH uses fenn traps & he buries new traps in the garden for 7 days before he sets them. This gets rid of the oily smell on new traps. Apparently the rats wont walk over the plate if they smell new, or of humans. I keep telling him they won't root but he keeps on trying Also you need to ensure that the traps are set lightly otherwise a rat can walk orer the treddle plate without setting the thing off. If you use something like a fenn trap its always worth setting the trap & then gently tapping on the plate with a stick until you get it set to a sensetive level before flicking off the safety hook. Set them right & they will catch.
