  • Creocote

Just popped up the road to my local focus and they don't sell it

Before I do 100 mile round trip to all DIY stores, does anyone know which ones definitely stock it ?

    Thankyou

B&Q, Wickes, Wilkinsons. Its a creosote substitute you're looking for. Creocote is a trade name so Focus may have their own name for it. You could try agricultural places too Countrywide, Wynnstay farmers etc. Its very common and easily available

It's a wood preservative, but not recommended for use near plants or wildlife. What do you want it for?

So is the own make as good as the original for preventing spider mite ?

You can still get 'proper' creosote round here anyway at agricultural farm outlets like thenplace I get my feed from. It only comes in 25 litres minimum to discourage people buying it and being silly with it though
25 litres would cover our 3 sheds and a new coop for us and the original is better than the substitute which is watery and doesn't preseve as well IMO.

Didn't realise you could still get the original stuff. After my painting exploits this weekend, I have a new perfume - eu de creosote! Despite having two long scrubs in the bath.

I only know this as my neighbour painted up his new fence in the summer with real stuff and his farmer friend had let him in on the secret. Fence still whiffs if you sniff it, not that I go round sniffing fences lol, I lean over it to give him eggs

Yes! it's what we've all been using this year! The red mite just pour out waving white flags! No need to endanger yourself or your chooks by using the original carcinogenic stuff!
Whops just realised you were talking about the substitute antway! Yes it's probably all made by the same firm anyway and just labelled for each retailer!

So its a new coop and run, does Creocote prevent red might in the first place or do you use it to get rid when you get them ?

Think of it as a deterrent. The mites won't feel much like setting up home in a freshly treated henhouse, but once summer is here and it is nice and warm (don't we all hope) you will need to starting checking regularly. If you do get an invasion another coat into the cracks/crevices/perches usually kills them off.

By the way, red mite is not red spider mite (which affects plants). It's actually black/grey and only becomes red after it has fed. They feed off the hen at night then tuck themselves away in the cracks and crevices of the henhouse during the day when the hens go outside. Bad infestations can cause the hens to become anaemic and even die. Pale combs and hens refusing to go inside to roost (when they have previously done so) are often a sign that mites have taken up residence.
