Skyline?

Happy mothers day!

This morning I persuaded my children that the best mother's day present they could possibly talk their father into getting me was a couple of cream legbars.

We'd phoned the supplier and been assured that they had some available, in all different age groups. Made the hour long trip to them, only to be told they didnt actually have any available (grrrrr) but would I be interested in a pair of Skylines. It was actually the green eggs I was looking for, to add to my collection of all colours and was assured that these were hybrids that would produce the green egg.

Besides, they turned out to be very pretty girls, apparently around 20 weeks old, a lot bigger than I'd thought but having seen them, I couldnt say no.

Brought them home, googled the breed because I'd never heard of them and read that there is only 70% chance of them laying green eggs.

Does anyone have Skyline's that do produce a green egg, or not as the case may be? As gorgeous as they are, I think if I'd known it was pot luck, I'd have probably waited for the Legbars - I havent got room to get them as well now. Will post pics later

i had not come across them before, but just lokoed them up. apparently they lay a variety of colours, from blue, green, jade and olive, right through to light tan and even coral.

this just goes to show that with that diverse colour range the hybrid has not standardised yet. what you must remember is that the cream legbar is a hybrid itself, having the ability to breed true and predictably with regards to looks and colour.

if the skyline can lay blue or green then that trait is from the cream legbar (they are legbar looking i must say). but to go down the road of tan eggs i would assume that they have crossed in some rhode island to get the quantity of eggs, and then to get a coral egg would suggest that the croad langshan is in the mix somewhere too. to produce the olive you need to put a cream legbar to a brown layer, such as a cochin but it shows no sign of feathering to the legs, so i assume it gets the borwn overlay from the RIR. Until they have stabilised the breed i would say you are looking at pot luck.

i would wait and see what colour egg they lay and make a decision from there. if you have the opportunity to breed from them, i would put them back to a Cream Legbar cockerel to fix the blue.

Hi SuzyB, I have a Skyline & she is a doll, lays an egg which varies from light army green to a dirty blue.

Here is a pic of her, along with 'Spot' who is a huge speckled sussex now, Sky is also nearly twice as large not with a snazzy 'hairdo'.

Your sky is very like my Cherry, gorgeous colours.

It'll be even more exciting if the eggs are different colours on different days - kids will love collecting those!
