Raising the Roosts!

The Roosts in my chicken house are only just higher than the nest box'es so was thinking of raising them further up toward the roof of the Chicken house, question is how much space will they need? i.e.. how much space between the roosting perches and the roof will be needed is 8inches about right or more?

i suppose it all depends on the size of your birds,i gave mine enough room to have a stretch while on the roosting bars,it is awkward as you dont want a really big space above them when the weather gets as cold as it has this winter(on that subject,now 4 mornings running i havent had to defrost the birds water,and thats since mid december).i took a rough measurement of biggest bird,added 2ins and used that as roof height...have fun running after them,trying to take a measurement....

I reckon if you give chooks that are about ISA Brown size at least a couple of feet headroom you won't go too far wrong.

My roosting bars are high (3 foot and 4 foot) which leaves plenty of headroom in a garden shed.
Chooks appear to like it this way as they can peek out the window at the sunrise and they know its time to get up!

Not picking the Birds up till Sunday just want them to be as comfortable as possible, perhaps it's best I leave the current ones in there where they are and maybe just add a few more with about a foot of height, or run round after them on sunday measuring them


I did read somewhere on internet that you can leave a candle in the coop overnight to stop things freezing over, but could that not be a fire hazard.

if i left a candle in the coop,my lot would be making their own favourite..toast..given half a chance.

Well it seemed a bit daft to me, leaving a candle in a coop is surely asking for trouble.

I would certainly not recommend leaving a candle in the coop, unless you want roast chicken.
