  • no ring of condidence

the other week we put some coloured leg rings on some of our birds,as it was getting difficult to tell them apart, went out this morning and polly, our laid back isa brown, had her leg ring around her foot,i got her out and removed the ring, and now she is limping,i dont think there is any serious damage done, but it was a shock to see her foot trapped,i have now taken them off the rest, just in case..she is favouring that leg but still using it to get around, especially at evening rice time.the leg rings only clip together, did i get the wrong type?..

Poor Polly. Hope she heals quickly.
When I got my ex-batts I couldn't tell them apart and for quickness as I couldn't get rings, my OH made rings from coloured electrical tape. He folded it back on itself so none of the sticky touched the chickens leg. We never did get any proper rings.

Sounds like either the ring was too big, and shes caught it on something and pulled it down. Or shes managed to get her leg stuck through a narrow gap and pulled it down while trying to get her leg back out.
Dont panic as long as she hasnt cut her leg or foot she'll be fine after a few days.
They come in a lot of different sizes Buffs, and from experience on a fully grown hen should only have enough room under it to let it slide up and down a little, so they dont get them caught easily. Cockerals need much bigger rings than their girlies and of course bantys have smaller ones. Personally I dont like the spiral ones as they sometimes have sharp edges which can nick the leg when you put them on, although if you wrap a piece of cloth round first, then slip it from under after it stops that. But Ive got clip ones now and they are fine even though they range in some rough grass etc.
When I first got my Cream legbars I rung them so I could see which pair was which, but the boys outgrew theirs and they had to be cut off with pruning shears
