wind in the willows

for the past week something has been startling the birds at odd times,they would all congregate in one spot,refusing to move around. today we found out why,they were running again and i saw some movement,after moving a pallet i found,not a mouse,not a rat, but the biggest frog i have seen in years,i thought it was a toad at first,but it was smooth skinned,so definitely a frog. i lifted it out of the pen and he has been relocated to the old bath sunken in the veg patch,he can now help his kin keep down the slug population.being as how he kept by the coop,did he think of himself as toad of toad hall,an ambitious amphibian no doubt

Has the sunken bathtub got an exit-ramp to help frogs and the likes get out again so they don't drown?

yes,i have put some plastic coated mesh on the sloped end and it rests underwater against a slab that used to do the job,like twenty ladders side by side,gaps in mesh about3/8th or 1/2in,so the big bruiser isnt going to fall between the rungs...dont think its a male actually,arent the females usually the bigger?

Buffs - I wouldn't know a female frog/toad from a male of the same species if it was wearing high heels, a summer dress and blew me a kiss! Haha.
(Anyone else think that sounds like the frog-prince as a drag queen?)

this thing was big,body was 2-2 1/2" across,when it splayed its rear legs,they were over 6ins across,head to bum,3ins approx,as i say a real bruiser,im just hoping it stays around to keep vegs slug free,(and has big bruiser babies),has a shady area to colonise,right by the old bath..

Buffs I rather think frogs begger off back to where they hatched out to breed, lady who used to live near me who used to know about such things said stick some spawn in your pond/bath etc. Cos then they come back to you.
As for chooks eating them, caught one of mine today running round with a very dried out frog that must have been in the hay bale, poor thing. How he thought he was going to eat that I dont know, but being a chook I bet he managed it!

the frog was probably born in the same old bath,as its been there for some years,how he got in with the birds i dont know,i have heavy mesh netting all round and doubled up chicken wire all round the bottom,he must have sneaked in with some bedding/straw/woodchippings.if he/she wasnt so big i bet it would have ended up as a chook snack,but he/she had them terrified,if it grows much bigger,I will be terrified too,had to use two hands to hold it last time..
