I think my old girl has a tumour on her leg

Been out to the chooks and one of my old girls is well just sitting there, she has been lethargic for a few days, today though her head is dipped, almost laying on the floor. She didn't move when corn was put down i had to encourage her to do so, when she did it was done with a severe limp and i spotted on the back of her leg not far above the foot, what looks like a lump of mud, when i tried to clean it off, it wouldn't budge and she was quite distressed at my trying ( i was gentle!) i fear she may now be on her way out as right now her breathing is heavy almost wheezy like and with her head dipped so low to the ground i think she's given up.

Poor girl. Is she an ex-batt? They seem quite prone to tumours. Breathing does get wheezy as they fill up with fluid. (can't remember the medical term) Perhaps the kindest thing is to put her out of her misery but only a vet or very experienced person can tell you for sure. ((((((big hug))))))

the crust of "mud" could be a scab over an injury. if she is wheezing, it could be a build up of fluid or it could be a cold. i would pop her down the vet to be certain.

Very true. I never take chances with mine and always take to the vet for diagnosis. However not everyone see chickens as pets.

Not accusing veggie lover, but using her situation as an example.............

if someone had a cat or a dog wheezing, lethargic in the corner they would get onto the vet straight away.

The problem with chooks is that people either see them as a cheap expendable commodity, or as livestock not pets. As such, vets have limited experience of them as the vet is hardly called in as the owner either "necks them", "waits to see" or in the case of commercial terms, the one is culled to save the others without veterinary consultation.

by all means seek advice as Veggielover has, but my moto is "if the cause aint obvious, or you dont have the experience and knowledge to diagnose it or treat it yourself, get it professionally seen to"
