went to penk last night - grumble grumble, spent money - grumble grumble

bought some more turkeys and some pekins...........

i am a poultry-o-holic and my name is Mike............

Did anyone else on the vine go? did you see the daft prices? so birds went really cheap like the Lincolnshire Buffs (ancestors or the Buff Opington and a very rare breed) went for £20 the pair, a trio of columbian pekins that had bad shape, and poor colouring went for £46 each!!!!! wish i hadnt sold mine for £15 each the other day!

    anyways, turkey piccies below......

I had every intention of going - just to "look" you understand! But I was busy settling in one of Shelly's broodies I'll go to the next one though, the prices should be a bit more realistic (I hope!) I might even have some spares to sell

I've found that too Mike. Pretty little banties fetch silly money, while other things dont. Also any hen with chicks under her is guarenteed to fetch silly money, silkie x hen and three mongral chicks £46. And two of the chicks were quite obviously boys. Up here though there is rarely anything unusual or very rare in an auction. Or not that I've seen so far. Just the same breeds and colours over and over.

I didn't go Mike, as I have no more room And the last time I went I made Maureen stay till the end because I had seen some chicks with Croad Langshan on the box. They were something else though and I probably didn't have room last time either lol.
I know what you ean Hilly, I saw a blue orp hen sat in a box with a bunch of yellow chicks which definately were not blue or splash orps, they went for silly money too.
Although, I would like to have some birds to put in the next one so I may have to leave the purse at home that night

well we got away with it lightly as there were quite a few turkeys in this time which drove the prices down which was good. Last time we went, a pair of bronze went for £100, this time they were going for £40 a pair.

Jennie managed to pick up some beautiful lavender pekins to mix into her existing flock to widen the gene pool which was good, mind you the price was higher than normal at £20 each. they have good shape, fantastic lift at the bum end and as for feathery feet, you would think that they are hover pekins - you cant see the feet!

all in all we managed to get away with spending less than £250 - just, which was a good value night for us. the ones we really went for such as the splash cochins etc had been substituted for other birds, or the Barbu D'Anvers were such poor quality and obviously a pair of boys not a true pair, but they still fetched silly money! i suppose if they breed and produce eggs they will be worth a lot of money!

there is a rare breeds on at Carlisle next weekend tha twe really want to go to as the Barbu section is very well represented, but it clashes with Charlotte entering her "babies" into the Whicthurch and Malpas show so we will go there instead!

Would have been nice to see you at Carlisle, I'm going with the hopes of some copper marans. I'll let you know what the d'uccles fetch, unless they clash with something else I'm after. To be honest there doesnt seem to be half the entries that there were at the February sale, so I suspect that prices will be sky high cos there are lots after little.

Well we ummed and ahhed about splitting up for the day and 1 of us going to Carlise and 1 to the show but its Charlottes First show in her own name so we have decided to support her fully and all go together - theres always next time for Carlise and we can meet up for a dodgey cuppa in a polystyrene cup then.

DON'T tell me what the belgians go for or I might cry - although the Belgians are Charlottes but she wants the Cuckoos that are listed!
