    chicks

Hey Greenarmy. Best type to my mind are Rhode Island Reds. POL point of lay. You'll have eggs in a few weeks. My neighbour has a bottomless mobile coop that he moves uniformily around the garden and the hens scratch up the soil and eat up any weed seed and pests. Do eventually try to make a larger run for them as they are intelligent and lovable contrary to popular belief. My mum used to put them into a pram and cover them with a blanket and push them down the road( when she was young) until the sargent one day checked to see what was under the blanket. It was back in the 40's. Win your wife over by getting a few Tizzles or Frizzles. They are like a miniture feather duster on two legs. She'll definately fall in love with them.

i prefer the pekins or silkies. or better still a silkie/ pekin cross; gentle, cuddly little birds, great layers, and if you decide to hatch some babies, you wont need an incubator, as they go broody easily i think they lay a decent sixed egg, in comparison to thier body weight ; i use 3 of thier eggs for 2 of a larger bird.

I keep all pure breeds....Faverolles (out and out winners), Marans and Araucanas. All lovely birds...Marans are quite loud...but all great egg layers and wonderful pets - with a fab array of egg colours.
I love to talk about nothing. It's the only thing I know anything about!!
