Orchid had all the other symptoms of blackhead except the thirst. She wouldn't drink at all. Vet said it was because the crop thickens with fungal infection. I suppose it must be like oral thrush. Anyway 75% improved today. I really didn't think I was going to win this one and vet said to take her back today if no improvement and he would put her to sleep. No charge. I don't think this is going to be necessary now as she's back outside scratching around.

Thanks all. Orchid is still with us. Eating and drinking well and poo almost normal, just a little runny. She runs around for titbits, worms etc but also spends a lot of time asleep, either standing with eyes closed and head tucked in or nestled down with her head behind under her wing. I don't think she's in pain but at the same time I can see she's not 100%. The others are all OK so hopefully they have escaped the worst. I was getting 2 new girls on my return from Spain (had I gone that is!) but not sure how long I should wait as don't want to introduce newbies to something they might have no resistance to.

I would certainly hold off getting any newbies, particularly youngsters, unless you can keep them in a separate part of the garden.

Glad to hear she is a little better but as you say, still doesn't sound "right". Only time will tell I think. Is she an ex batt?

Yes, she's an ex-batt. usually high up in the pecking order. The girls have most of the garden as it is so can't really keep newbies seperate. I'll just have to wait a bit longer.
