  • Egg problems...

    Evening.
Well it's not the chicks this time
Yesterday we had an egg with quite a lot of blood on it and then again today...assuming we found the girl that laid them as she has a very red and sore looking vent.
Other than that I can't see any other symptoms that would concern me...she has an incredibly red comb and was running around with the rest of them.
    Any ideas?

Have she laid a large egg recently and strained the area?
I believe preperation H is good for getting down the swelling ( must put some on my shopping list- for the chooks!!)
bleeding???....it's not been pecked at has it? If not- maybe a tear????

just a big guess for me too Di- but I think antibiotics may be in order ( poop and open wounds don't mix)...and seperating from the others- or spray with purple spray??)

(Just some thoughts to bounce around in you head!)

Is the red and sore bit on the outside of the vent, ie around the edge, rather than the soft tissue just inside? Mine do sometimes get sore around the outside if they are getting a lot of attention from the cock. They do sometimes get a little over-enthusiastic!

If she is otherwise well I would leave things be and see how she is in a day or so. If you think she is getting trodden too much then you could separate her for a rest, or remove the cock if you are not currently needing to breed from him.

There wasn't actually any blood on the vent, just very red and sore looking...I'm afraid I didn't investigate inside
She came out with the others this morning and I had an effort to work out which was her,so she's showing no other signs of discomfort.
I'll stop at the chemists on the way and pick up some Prep H...I take it it's not the same as Caneston,I already have a tube of that in their First Aid box.
I wonder if an egg broke inside her...if that's the case should it right itself or would it need intervention.
We don't have anymore Cocks so they can't take the blame this time
Poor Gal is probably dreading laying today

Hmmm, Nicos, bear in mind your comment on another thread. preperation h is a heameroid (sp) cream licenced for use in humans not chooks. It may well be effective, but..human medications are often far stronger than those designed for animals, use with caution!
