  • Our first eggs.

We have had our first eggs "today", 11am-ish this morning.

I found one in the nest box and one on the run floor, both in good condition weighing 44g each. I'm not sure if the one on the run floor was an early morning lay or poss' a late evening from yesterday as the Wife said it was cold and the one from the nest box was still warm!
Also the yolks on both were a bit on the pale side not the bright orange we had expected, is this normal for the first eggs?

?I'm still feeding a growers/layers pellet mix (70%-30%) as I hadn't expected them to lay just yet and I thought they still had a bit of growing to do, the "little" one definitely does.

    Any suggestions on the feed?

I've a new sack of layers pellets ready to go when the "mix" runs out, in about a week the way my lot eat.

All three seem very happy now, eat well, drink well and the "korma" poop problem seems to have settled down to one or two "every now and then".

The sight of my little one running round the garden shouting "Daisy laid an egg, Daisy laid an egg" at the top of her voice made it all worth while.

Thanks for all the advice so far,

    Graham.

Feeding the growers to use it up is ok as long as does not contain a coccidiostat (medication against coccidiosis). If that is the case you should not really eat the eggs. Look for the letter ACS on the bag label. If it says medication free or similar wording then it is fine to eat your first eggs. If it does contain ACS then stop feeding it now and just feed them layers.

Some layers pellet has yolk pigmenters added, although they are often natural ones like marigold. The best thing for getting orange yolks is plenty of grass and green stuff. Let your birds free range as often as possible to help them take in as much green as they need.

Tined Sweetcorn (not the one in salt) helps to yellow up the yolks as does the likes of a few garden grubs and broccoli/Cauliflower.

Our first eggs ranged from as small as 34g but they have all beefed up now and at a nice size, hope you took a pic of your first eggs! Just wait till you get a double or even a triple yolk.
