  • Chicken book recommendations?

OK, I like to read around stuff I'm interested in, and have picked up a couple of poultry books, but am interested to see what (if anything) you read/use as a reference?

    I've currently got:
Raising Chickens for Eggs & Meat by Mike Woolnough
    and
Starting with Chickens by Katie Thear

Would you recommend any more? Anything you keep to hand all the time?

Both excellent!! To be fair you shouldn't need another book if you have those

There is one called Urban Hen by paul peacock - they currently have it in the works for a couple of quid - quite good as it is designed for people who have chooks in a town setting, so addresses problems that would arise in such situations.

Unfortunatley alot of the cheaper books you see around are american so not really suitable for our regulations.

      Haynes Manual

I was in Waterstones today and found the Haynes Chicken Manual. I read the chapter on hatching eggs etc (cos our four hatched today) and it was excellent. It was nearly £20 so I came home and looked it up on Amazon...it was £11 on there and free delivery.

Really looking forward to getting it as I think it's going to be really useful and well-thumbed!

at the Smallholders Show last weekend, the Good Life Press had a stand there amd they were selling off titles to clear down stock ready for the new intake of books in June. They had the Haynes Manual of Chickens for £10, and even some smallholding books starting at 20p.

not sure if they have them that low on their website, (they do have the grow and cook handbook for £1) but i know that they will setting up again at the Cornish Show 10-12 june 2010, at wadebridge. they usually have bargain bins etc there so have a mooch around. I got a fantastic book on building plans for the farm, everything from a chicken coop or rabbit hutch right up to a dutch barn.
