  • None stop eating!

    Hi,

So I’m a week into my first 6 hens and they seem to have settled in well, they're happy healthy and laying like made, but they never seem to stop eating! I give them the recommended 125g each of layers pellets in the morning, along with a mash made from our cooked peelings and oats, then I give them garden greens, and slugs and snails I can find, and normally another 75g of layers pellets each - but they still go crazy for more food.

Am I underfeeding them or have I just got some seriously greedy chickens?

    Thanks

    Neil

Chooks are very greedy! Ad-lib pellets seems to be the way to go, and leave them to it until late afternoon. Then any treats, in very small quantities, just before bed-time. I spoiled mine the first few weeks, and had various problems; thin shells, egg-eating. You really do have to be cruel to be kind. Good luck with them, and don't forget to post pictures of them for us nosey wotsits!

In my experience (only just over a year) chickens are never full!

Hi, got to agree with above posts, they never seem to be full. You do have to be cruel to be kind, as they say, fat chickens don't lay eggs and it's true.

Funny things aren't they. I tipped the contents of their hopper into a bowl this afternoon so I could wash the hopper and they fell on the bowl as if starving. I wouldn't care but they have pellets ad lib and it was the same pellets that had been there all morning.
