  • Think we need a vet

Hi all, am hoping that there are a few of you near to me that can reccommend a vet. I live in Long Eaton NG10 area.
One of the girls is egg bound and Ive not been able to sort her out with bathing and castor oil. Shes still eating and dringking- but belly is becoming more swollen and now has more depressed periods.

Havent had a problem that needed a vet yet and so far the ones in town seem to be mainly for the fluffy pets! (although I will ring them in the morning)so in the mean time- if anyone has any reccomendations.

    Thanks

sorry I can't help re finding a vet because I'm not in that area, but I reckon you are spot on in wanting to see one.

If the home remedies have failed it sounds like thats your only option. Best of luck, let us know how you get on xx

Are you sure she's egg bound? If it's been going on sometime it's unlikely. Could be egg peritonitis or a tumour causing the ascites(abdominal swelling) All need a vet to treat. I'd try your local vets to at least get her seen - on one occasion our vet didn't know what the problem was and he went and got his poultry diseases book and we sorted the problem between us! Baytril is the antibiotic most often given for most illnesses and Tylan for respiratory illness.
Your girl sounds as if she needs seeing sooner rather than later. Good luck.

I would agree with Sue. In any case she does need to be seen asap. Do you have a local farm vet? Our small animal vet practice won't see poultry (even though one of the vets keeps hens herself) so we are also registered with the local farm vets.
