If you want to end up with 6 start with 2 or 3 hybrids. These will give you your eggs as said by Martin B. I would then try to visit a few poultry shows / displays (often found at agricultural shows etc) try and get hold of the British Poultry Standards book via your library, search the internet etc. The are an amazing amount of different breeds and colours of each breed. If you have your basic egg base in hybrids you can then add a couple of fancier birds if you so wish.
If you want to have all hybrids, get 3 now and 3 later on. This way they won't all reach old age at the same time in the future.
