Introducing My Chooks...

Hello Chookaholics, I have a confession to make. I have succumbed to the Chookside & now have 4 hybrid birds. About blinking time I showed them off, so here they are;









I've not has them long but I wonder what I ever did without them!

Lovely chooks, they look like proper characters. You do wonder how you survived pre-chooks. I really wish I had got chooks earlier in life, but we moved too often back then. Have they got names?

Six of our eggs in the bator are 'lucky dips' and are hybrids. Can't wait to see what they look like!

My BH has a Tshirt which reads 'Come to the Darkside....we have chocolate' bought for him because he's a chocolatier. I think maybe I should get one that says 'Come to the Chookside......we have chickies'

They are proper characters. The ginger and black one & the small grey one are called Minnie (the Minx) & Ivy (the Terrible) respectively as they're quite naughty. The grey/brown one is a bit, well alot actually, of a complainer so she's called Mona & the light-sussex looki-likee is yet to be named.

I've never had a very tidy garden, I like to let nature sort itself out & I've never been adamant about a perfect lawn so the addition of chooks hasn't been a problem!

It's now a question of should I get some fertile eggs?

Fertile eggs? - well , why not- so long as you have plans for the young cockerels!

Out of interest- what colour eggs do your gals lay????

That's the thing about fertile eggs, where would the cocks go? I'd love to keep one. I'd have to ask the place where I got them from about that, but other than that I don't know!

I get three different coloured eggs, 2 are pale cream, there's a 'normal' coloured one that's speckledy & a lightish brown one.

Hmmm, I'm hopefully acquiring a rabbit hutch tonight from a lady I work with (if it fits in my Mums hatchback car) so that'll be somewhere for a broody chook & her brood...

Make sure you do know what to do with the cocks before you start hatching. Sometimes a whole hatch can be male. I very rarely have even a 50/50 hatch, it's often higher on the male side (must be something in the water!). And you won't rehome them easily, even if they are pure breeds. People rarely take on other people's cocks unless they are very good examples of their breed and in tip top condition. If you can, fatten them up and eat them, then they won't be wasted, but you need to make sure you can do this, or get someone else to take them on for the purpose.

Please please think before you get seduced by the idea of fluffy chicks. And they are not fluffy for long. Two weeks old and they will be feathering up, six weeks old they will be adolescents squabbling.

It's something I'm still considering RH. Although I do have the hutch I won't be doing anything in a rush, it took me long enough to build my chook house & run
