  • Should I get more?

Well following the loss of "Chicken" this morning and 2 remaining hens of the same age, I have realised that we are now in a position to end up with a single lone hen at some point and I understand that this is not a good position to be in.... I also understand that it is better to introduce more hens now rather than when we have just 1 hen...

but I have a problem... dh doesn't want any more... he doesn't like them - never has - they have feathers you see (he doesn't like fish either.. they have scales)

I'm only thinking of 2 more, ds1 would like a hen that lays blue eggs and I would like a couple of bantams (we have 2 warrens).. so how could I persuade dh that we need more?!

I take it if OH does not like hens he doesn't have much to do with them? If so, what does it matter if you have more if they are your responsibility?

Me and OH have differing tastes, and I just generally ignore his (doing up crappy cars) if they don't coincide with mine and he does the same

Its all about the eggs - surely he is a convert to lovely fresh eggs rather than the nasty supermarket ones - even the free range ones aren't as good are they? I would have thought if you and ds1 promise to look after them he wont have to get involved apart from the eating eggs bit!

[insert advert] I keep cream legbars and need to sell a couple if you can be persuasive (I'm near Weston Super Mare). They lay lovely light blue eggs. They aren't all that cuddly like warrens though PM me if you wish.

You can never have too many eggs, nor chickens for that matter.

My hubby don't mind the girl's I have at the mo, but he was dead set against me getting more... still is in a word, but tough if he wants he's little motorbike project - I will have my chickens seeing how I'm the one who does all the hard work.

Ok, he feeds them and collects eggs and will top up the drinker when it's low, but still... Men eh! (sorry to all you male chook keepers, you're not included in that little rant)

not just my dh then! You are all right I realise that and I am over-ruling him! I had to push to get these hens - they are pets for our ds's (and chosen as I knew I would be looking after them plus we already have 2 dogs).

Squibbs - I would be interested in knowing more so will pm you

I agree with all the others. Totally ignore dh. You look after them, it's up to you

Cream legbars are pretty small anyhow, not a great deal bigger than bantams so you could "compromise" and just say ok we'll have just a few legbars then!
