To BUFFS, make sure what you shoot is legal quarry and Cats are NOT!!!
A statement that if the cat hasn't got a collar on is not any sort of professional judgement are you a professional pest controller? i think ..no.. with all due respect i love the dawn chorus and all things great and small but the statements your making are somewhat jaded

      Just personal choice...

I do spend much of my time in my garden and other gardens!!

My cats are (well fed) pets - that would not stop them doing the dastardly deed of killing a bird if the mood took them, it is nature - sh!t happens.

        Greenfly attack my veg
        Birds kill other birds
        Dogs chase cats
Cats thumb their noses at dogs
        ...and so on

ETA: I am truly sorry that your chick was attacked Jules, horrid for you

I love cats, I have 11, and whether pets or not, cats are cats. It doesn't matter how cross or frustrated I feel about the semi-feral cat along the road helping himself to a snack. Maybe if it was better fed it wouldn't have done it, but my cats are well fed and we've had several bird casualties this spring. Maybe we were at fault for putting temptation in his way.

The fact that one of our beloved spoiled hens attacked a chick with, it seems, intent to kill, was much more shocking to us. Cats will be cats - but chickens?

PS Having been away for only 4 days, I just can't believe how much our 5wk olds have changed - amazing!

Cats will do whats in a cats nature. I have two well fed and well cared-for cats. It doesn't stop them from hunting the birds unfortunately.
Its the nature of the beast.
I love the birds and absolutely hate to see them being hunted or killed, but it will always happen.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I was on the lottie the other day and I heard the most horrendous sound I ran over to where the noise was coming from it sounded like a baby screaming. A cat was on the lottie and must have approached the chickes. The cock had got the cat pinned and was attacking it I had to chase the cock away and the cat bolted. Not seen it since

Lol! nice one cockerel! i was a little worried by one or two comments insinuating a cat without a collar or bell is feral - You really shouldn't put a collar on a cat as they can hang themselves you know. We lost our beloved Mimsy 3 days ago to someone speeding through the village, emotions are raw right now, please don't hurt cats!

One of my cats is allergic to anything around his neck - if we put a collar on him he goes bald round his neck within days so he cant wear one. He also has a reoccuring skin complaint that gives him bald patches on his back when it flares up so he often looks like a scruffy stray. Id hate to think anyone would ever consider him feral because he's collarless and looks the part

Petal ((((Hugs)))) we've lost three cats to the road here over a couple of years as our road suddenly got busier when 1400 new homes were built in our village, so I know how you must feel. Sadly, one of ours did manage to hang herself by her collar 6 years ago, so ours don't wear collars now. We had them chipped instead (nearly had to take out a mortgage for 11) which is safer, but of course it doesn't make them feral at all.

We had to take the bells off our cat's collars cos the dog's would chase them when they tried to pass them in the kitchen.
Funnily enough the dog's ended up with the bells so the cat's would know it was safe to pass.

They had a love hate relationship going on, but both cat's are now in kitty heaven. One from being hit by a car, they other died in a neighbours garden.
As an animal lover, it is hard to see animals being harmed, but it truly hurts more when it happens to your own.
RIP Mimsy (((Hugs))) to you petal

Juleapplle, you say the R.S.P.C.A. won't come out and deal with your problem, no surprise there!
Get in touch with your local Cat's Protection League, they will respond I'm sure, at the very least in trapping and neutering the cats.

Hello everyone, sorry to hear about your losses!

We will be collecting our first batch of ex-bats at the end of the month. We plan on having a covered run that the girls can enjoy in safety. Hope to give them a free run around the garden when we are around but living in a semi-rural location we have unwanted visitors at all hours icluding cats, badgers, foxes, birds of prey... will need to work on my scarey faces!!

We also have two beautiful Ragdoll cats who only go outside with us on one of those cat walking malarkys which they are very happy with. They are very timid and I doubt they will ever go near my girls
