  • Jimmy's life of chickens

    Anyone else watch it tonight?
Some of it was quite interesting. Always knew they could work things out pretty fast but the stars and circles trick was great.
And the bit about their eyesight.
Hated seeing the poor chicks being sorted ready for raising. The way they were just grabbed and thrown, and dumped off the end of a chute...I'd like to do the same to the sorters!

I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it I was amazed that a cockerel had managed to slip through the sorting process and had lived in a battery cage for so long without being noticed , just goes to show how much attention those poor birds get doesn't it
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

We only noticed it was on when we channel hopped just to see if there was anything worth watching for a hour or so before toddling off to bed.

          What a fantastic programme!!!!
Maybe it'll help peeps realise that there's a personality and a brain in those poor chicks which are shoved away in cages to produce cheap meat and eggs.

And Maureen- I agree- that's EXACTLY what I was thinking about the cockerel

So as my Paxo has lost his left eye- that's his 'looking for food' eye isn't it?- ...... it looks like the right eye doesn't just look out for prey otherwise he'd have starved to death. Interesting

( I also enjoyed the Victorian medicine programme after it too)

It was great ,was'nt it. Really horrible seeing the chicks being handled that way, as though they were inanimate objects but it just shows how versatile and tough these creatures are.
Loved the fact that they were'nt fooled by the stuffed fox, you could see it on their faces-'what on earth are those humans up to now!' and the poor cockeral and his silly walk from being cooped up too long, didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

It's worth watching if you are into chickens, really interesting. They are cleverer than I gave them credit for! Actually I just watched my cockerel jump a 5ft gate to wander 50ft to the blackcurrant bushes to help himself...

It's not uncommon to find the occasional cockeral slipping through the net. The battery rehomers are the ones who find this out. Such a shame. You have to admire the people who do what that woman does though.

Mine are not so much clever as cunning, I'd say! They have very good memories too.

I must admit one of the things I found most interesting was to see BHWT bosses place Too nosy..
And fun to see that despite all her ex-bats the two original cockerals were Pekins (if I'm wrong don't laugh)..(too much).
I must say that the farmer with the battery farm is obviously one of the better ones, as most of the chooks were in fair nick. The only one I've been inside was no way as clean, and 50% of their hens were really poor. Never again unless I'm rescuing some!!

Bob, You're welcome..are we welcoming you to the chook addicts ?

PS Flum, can I nick one of your t-shirts with the chook prints up the back After the last week I want one that says 'chicken keepers do it in the mud'

I watch it earlier as i missed it on tv, and my god I am a bigger wuss than the girl's i think.

Crying at the fox attack, then at the battery farm... you should of seen me when I watched "Gourmet Farmer"... I swear he pulled the head off the roo , turns out he had a knife in he's hand when he dispatched him. But you didn't see that until the 3rd roo.

                              Indeed you are.
I am planning how to build the run at the moment, suspect it will end up similar to Flummerys, with one important (for me) modification.
This will be on a different post in the next few days--- something for you to look forward to.
