I generally pour a tbsp of Cod Liver Oil over the food and then sprinkle a tbsp of lime stone flour over the top, the oil also helps the flour stick to the pellets.
You don't have to do this daily, once or twice a week should be sufficient to keep softie's at bay.

Me too, the broodies look so awful by the hatch time - pale combs, breast bones like razor blades, crazy growls and pecks and mucho bristlings of feathers if you go near them. Then two days later, a house of fluffy chicks and mama bustling about, on her feet, showing them how to scratch, what to eat, calling them to her. Its quite miraculous (and I've only done it thrice!)

I use a teaspoon of the oil, once a week in winter. Only occasionally in summer, if there is a fragile looking shell. The flour sticks a treat.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
