  • Another one bites the dust..........

    Oldie chook that is!

One of the oldies was sitting in the corner looking forlorn yesterday so I was not surprised to find her spreadeagled in the run and I presumed she was dead.
Took in a broomshank to fend off cockerel who wasn't to happy with me stealing one of his harim.........dead or alive.
When I picked her up she twitched but didn't open her eyes.
Carried her down to the bottom of the allotment so the other chooks couldn't see me as I put her out of her misery. I was going to take her home and put her in the bin, but the binmen don'y come until Thursday, so decided to light the woodburner at the lottie and cremate her.

Half an hour later there was nothing left.

Spose if you're a chook keeper you have to get used to life and death and just get on with it.

Aww Snadger, so sorry for your loss, and I hate to agree with you - but keeping chook's has opened my eyes to the whole life and death scenario.

Yep, reality check......it's quite a shock. Not sure it's anything I'll really feel comfortable with, if that's the right word.

You have my admiration and my sympathy Snadge.

sorry to hear that Snadger. I agree though I've had to do the deed a few times sad to say it does get easier. Im ok with it because it's not pointless there has always been a reason.

Snadger, you do your best but old age is always going to happen sadly, at least you didn't let her suffer any longer.
Its still a very forlorn feeling as you walk away with the body though. I had to finish one of mine the other day. She was on her way out when I went to put them to bed, no marks on her but I have a suspicion she may have argued with a horses foot as she was always inclined to just march in front of them when they were tearing round the field playing racehorses. The others have more sense and move back onto the yard when they start hoolying round.
I'm still not comfortable with it and doubt I ever will be..but it needs to be done.
