      • Hi, is this worth a message to the sellers on ebay?

We bought 8 hubbard hatching eggs and only 5 are fertile at 8 days, 6 orpington eggs, 4 fertile and 6 buff laced wyandotte bantams and only 3 are fertile at 8 days.

Or would you say this is not bad for ebay purchases? I know we have been lucky with our first 6 eggs all hatching and the 2nd batch (sebrights) 4 out of 6 hatching.

        • They've been through the post, so you get what you pay for, in effect. I collected mine, and only had 50% fertility. You can't really blame a seller if their Cockerel isn't doing the business, they can't force them! It's worth just letting the seller know that their Boy isn't doing his job, so they can do something about it, like get another, or reduce the amount of Hens he has to service. I let both my sellers know, and had nice replies from them, as most people just leave bad feedback instead, which is a little unfair.

I've just had Hubbard eggs off ebay and there was 1 DIS the rest were clear! So you're doing ok. They were under a broody so couldn't candle them as she was at the allotment. I now have some more Hubbards from a recommended seller (not ebay) and half the price; they are in the incy so will candle on Wednesday. This guy reckons he is getting 90% fertility even with posted eggs. We'll see!

                • I think that's a good result Munch. Anyway, you don't know that the undeveloped eggs were actually infertile, only that they haven't started to develop, possibly because of damage during transit.

                    • No idea? I even had a quick g**gle, and still none the wiser! What is the name of the product? You could do a search on that, which should give you more idea. I would guess it would be OK as long as you're not eating them for a couple of weeks. Ask your Vet?

                            • You don't need to powder the birds for red mite coz it lives in the house not on the birds. But if you want to do them why not use DE which is organic and safe to eat (at least for the birds!), not so good for the red mite though!
"Red mite powder" is often only DE anyway!

                              • Yay! Picking up 2 more ex-batts on Saturday. Lost the second of our original 3 last weekend to the big coop in the sky - leaving Chicken Licken wondering where everyone had gone. Glad she won't be on her own for much longer.
