Not told OH he is coming yet, not supposed to be getting any new birds for a few months... I was 'accidentally' looking at a poultry forum, and I 'accidentally' saw a FTGH ad for the cockerel, and I 'accidentally' sent a pm about him...
Yay Daisy laid an egg today.....after having a word and promising a few more grapes here and there result ! she is back on the lay. Cant wait for the other 2 to follow suit and start producing, particularly because we have a Welsummer for chocolate brown eggs and a Maran/black rock cross who we dont know what the eggs will come out as. : )
I think I've sourced some eggs of the breed a friend is after, so we're kind of aiming for early March for egg collection...(fingers crossed)...I've got a nice new shed to put the broody coop in for warmth and dry...
just incase anyone is interested, our pig shirley has had her piglets this morning at 10am. labour over and done with by 12 noon.
she had 8 piglets, 1 stillborn, 1 squashed and the others are OK. The 4 girls are with her at the moment, but the two boys needed some TLC and are currently under a heat lamp in the dining room getting hand fed colustrum.
Shirley has rejected them so i guess its two hourly feed patrol for me tonight!
frias - we are in for the long haul i am afraid. 2 hourly feeds for the next three to four days, then stretch it to 4 hours for the remainder of the week. at aged 3 weeks we can start to introduce "creep" feed, a pelleted feed and by 6 weeks they should be on that mainly.
acording to the books (wish i hadnt looked actually) a piglet at 28 days if sufficiently nourished shoudl weigh in at 7.5kg! thats a lot of pig to live in dining room! Me thinks that i will have to sort out alternate accommodation by then!
