  • Alleged to be due to humidity Munch. I changed my incubator for this reason as I had trouble keeping it down or raising it for hatching. Haven't done enough with the new all-singing all-dancing one to be sure but the hatch I have done had no DIS ones. All those that started to develop did hatch and the humidity was spot on all the way through.
Might just be poor eggs though. One of those things we'll never know!

      • Oh no!!

I hate this hatching milarky! I now have 2 little wyandotte banties that hatch this afternoon (a day early again) But the 2 that have hatched are not the one the pipped last night and hasnt stopped rocking and rolling around since, except the pip hole is no bigger!

I just find it so frustrating!!!

        • Put them under a broody next time! I've got 4 Silkies, 3 bantam Orps and now 2 large fowl Orps so shouldn't be short for next year!
The one who's pipped might still be absorbing the yolk sac.

          • Sue the one that pipped is still cheeping but the pip is still the same, not even broken through the 'skin' (not sure of it technical name)

Do you think it will still hatch normally?

                    • I've given up with the incubator and have all the eggs under hens now. Its so much easier, as long as they don't lose interest. i've a reserve broody too who is sitting on pot eggs just in case! I don't have high hopes for these eggs tho. When I had a good look at them, they have very thin spotted shells, not good. Why do people fob you off with rubbish?

                      • Does this happen to everyone else....

All my chick, about 3-4 days old, always get pooey bums and I have to soak it off.....

Does anyone know why? is it something I am doing wrong?

It's likely to be a low grade infection. Chicks shouldn't get pooey bums as a rule unless something is amiss. Try and combat it with feeding them finely chopped chives and dandelion and put crushed garlic in their water - these are all natural antibacterials. Are they under a hen or heat lamp? Remember to keep them very very clean and as they grow raise the drinker height so they don't poo in it.

                            Thank you x

                            • yep, they only get pasted up bums under a heat lamp, not under a broody. They might be chilled. It will pass but you need to pop a bit of vaseline on their bums or they will get sore!

                              • well, more chicks hatched! just about everything is still broody! I have oscar the creole pekin sat on 10 pekin and wyandotte bantam eggs, custard the gold silkie on 10 buff orpington, silkie and salmon faverolle eggs! Snowy the white silkie has hatched 5 chicks out of 10 eggs- 2 wyandottes, pekin, silkie and a faverolle silkie cross. Ruby the black silkie has 7 x 3 week old chicks(faverolle cross silkies- my master broody hen plan...., pekins and wyandottes!) I don't bother adding them to the how many chooks have u got list until I have worked out the keepers, sellers and eaters!
