  • Very quiet here at the moment.
We gave away a young banty cockerel and 'did' 4 'fatteners' yesterday. It makes you realise how much they all crowed!
( I think the remaining two have scellotaped their beaks shut and are in hiding!!!)

They're all a bit subdued now in fact.
And when the geese 'go' next week it'll be really quiet.
I love all the 'noise' they all make!

Well, luckily she was fine this morning. All symptoms gone amazingly. I had to check the other ex-batts thinking I must have put the wrong one in the sick bay!! She has spent the day in the shed, nice and quiet and is in there again tonight but planning to put her back in with the rest in the morning. Just a touch of cold this time so all good.

Good ol Respite - and thanks for recommending it way back :-)

Yes I have! Spent most of the day helping out at the Rescue place clipping nails and ctaching them up for new owners!
Have taken a couple of piccies but not downloaded yet. Will do some tomorrow. See ex-batt thread!

                • Chuffed to bits!

Well despite the howling gales and horizontal rain one of my Copper Blue Marans has started laying. Yesterdays little egg was really dark and todays is even darker and slightly bigger! Could be 2 laying as one of the Copper Blacks was fussing about in the coop as well but she didn't seem really committed!

                  • Ho-hum, after getting poo samples tested and coming back with very low worm and coxy counts, one Wyandotte chick has just died of E coli on the brain and liver, gut worms and cocciodosis. Make that one out!

                    • Can someone help me please re keeping chickens and rules in house deeds? Someone on my knitting forum would like to keep hens but says the deeds forbid it.

                      • Tell them to look at the AllotmentAct 1950 (I think) As I understand it that states that you can keep hens on land owned by you or used by you as if your own. There are obviously "nuisance" conditions noise, vermin etc which have to be proven. As I understand it this is an act of Parliament which therefore over-rides local by-laws, deeds etc. I read about it on another forum which I could PM you with. I've only heard about this and not read it myself so your friend needs to look into it thoroughly herself. I believe the people actually took barristers advice so worth reading through properly.
PS Have you moved? Don't remember you being in Netherlands before?

                        • That's interesting Sue. I live in a new build house (very lucky with a long large back garden, v unusual in a new house nowadays) and in the deeds there are several covenants - one being I'm not allowed to keep livestock. I think hens fall into that category but I have to say I ignored it. I just asked my neighbours if they objected and made sure I had a back up plan (a friend keeps hens and could have mine if things went awfully wrong)

Be good to know of the Allotment act overrides this although I would wonder why a covenenant restricting livestock would be written into house deeds if it could be overridden. Not surprising though!!
