One of my young pullets was under the weather and geting picked on by the others. After two days in isolation she sems a bit perkier so I've put her back in with the others. If she is getting picked on again tomorow I'll move her back into isolation. Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed, Snadger. I keep forgetting about this thread and rambling on about my Chooks in the 'General' thread.
I'm currently sat here with a generous layer of Diatom all over my arms and scalp. It hasn't done much for my already dried-out hair, either! Ironically, I was only saying to a friend, yesterday, that I hadn't been 'blessed' with the little buggas so far this year. That'll teach me!All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

Just come in after checking for eggs and came across a wind egg weighing 6g!
It's as small as a gooseberry.
Not got any new layers but one of the broodies has finally clambered off her nest after 4 weeks...could it be hers??"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Hi everyone
I am new to this forum. I am also new to chicken keeping having taken on 3 battery hens in February. I have got to grips with looking after them quickly using forums when I have had problems and it has been a real pleasure to see them starting to look really healthy and happy.
Now that the holiday season is approaching I am wondering what to do when we go away. Our neighbours do not want to look after them and none of our relatives are nearby. What I would really like is to do a swapsie with another local chicken keeper and look after theirs and they look after mine. But how to find such a person. We live in Purley in Surrey. Any ideas anyone?

You could perhaps have a chat with your vet to see if they have any other chook owners registered with them?
Same vet = fairly local owners I would have thought??

No post since mid-July!!
Now early September.... and I have a ruddy Broody! The same Speckledy that's done it twice already this year, the daft wotsit. Wouldn't have thought any of them would be broody with the days shortening so much. Anyone else still got Broodies? All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

Mine have all come out of it I had a speckeldy go broody early on in the year for about 2 months then my auracana joined her but finally no broodies which is a relief because I've got a serial soft shell layer so it got messy in there with the broody hens

Mine get sin-binned in a metal dog crate. It's in a sheltered part of the main run, but sitting about four inches off the ground. They have pellets and water, and a roof, but nothing comfortable to sit on - just the wire. I feel really mean doing it, but they have no Fella, so no fertile eggs, and they upset the others by monopolising the favourite nest-box.
Last year it was her and one of the black ones. This year it was her and another Speckledy, but the other gave up after four nights in the sin-bin. Can't quite believe she's on her third attempt! All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

I have a broody Speckledy and a White Star who is not laying and who can't make up her mind whether she is broody or not. She sits in the nest box for a while each day, throws straw and leaves around over her shoulder, and spends the rest of the day out with the others. She is one very confused chook. Neither of them are stroppy though the Speckledy fluffs herself up when I pick her up.
