Hi, this is gonna sound a really silly question but, is it ok to feed my chickens soda bread? Its homemade, and it would be the crusts mixed with water and other scraps. Just that I seem to remember years ago a story about someone feeding some kind of 'soda' (?) to seagulls/pigeons and it having a rather fatal and explosive effect on them. I've probiby mixed up the kinds of soda or something but I would just rather check before I give my hens a dubious treat.

I don't know crazy chickie. All I remember as a child is the hens got what no one else wanted. We ate soda bread and nobody said don't give that to the hens. It may not be the most beneficial food for them but it won't kill them or I'm sure we would have been warned. Wait and see what the experts thik.

We used to feed the chickens just about all the leftovers. Don't remember if we had soda bread or not but nothing else we left killed them. Maybe introduce in small quantities or give the local vet a phone - they don't charge for that (yet) here

If you sprinkled bread with Bicarb of Soda and fed it to the gulls, it reacted with acid in their guts and made them explode. Before they changed the formulation, I am led to believe that a painkiller (I think it was Aspirin) did the same.
As for soda bread, I imagine it would be okay - any soda in it has been "neutralised" by the baking so can't see that there would be a problem -but don't quote me on that!!

Hmm, think I might just leave out the soda bread, don't want to take any chaces with my girls.

cc think the soda is already expanded in the bread, so i would say yes, but i'm no vet.

"Expanded" is infinitely better than "neutralised" but couldn't get my brain in gear at that particular moment

dont think expanded is the right word either, it is friday, brain in shut down mode, i knew what you meant tho.
