what are their chances???

sadly, yesterday our broody accidentally got locked out from her eggs for about 4-5 hrs. (too many peeps around- and too much going on)

They were cold when I found them and, although Betty was delighted to jump back in and sit on them, I'm wondering what are the chances of them still being alive?
They are dark brown Marans eggs so I don't think I'll be able to candle them

I think Richmond posted for someone about this. As far as I remember if its early it should be ok but yours are mid range so not sure. Fingers crossed though.

I don't know either but think I'd leave her on them.
If you can cast your mind back to our first hatch...Marigold started them off and abandoned them about day 18(???)due to a mite infestation...they were cold for most of a *day before I persuaded her sis,Dandelion,to sit on them...had a pretty good hatch rate too I think.
I'll try and search out the thread later.

You may be lucky. I would just let her be and carry on. 4 - 5 hours is not a huge amount of time really (not like being left for a whole day). If the weather is warm where you are then chances are they should be ok. If if it was freezing cold and she had been off them for say 12 hours or so then it might be a disaster, but I think you might be ok.

Makes me feel guilty, one of my broodies runny pooped all over 10 eggs and abandoned them during the night. When I found them they were cold, so I just left them. Now I think maybe if I had cleaned them up and warmed them they might have been OK.
Or rather the 5 that had chicks in would have been. Next time....
