  • Every silver lining.........

    .........has a cloud
Took my Legbar to see the vet - she wandered all round vets room, no limp, no weakness, hopped over a bar to get under the table....don't you just LOVE them! so she didn't think it was Mareks. Think it might be a kidney infection so continuing with Baytril for a week and going to worm her again just in case. Phew what a relief.
Went to allotment to collect eggs and check on others and found an egg covered in blood. Checked all the brown girls; 7 ok the eighth had a huge prolapse and blood all down her back end. I brought her home to try and reduce it but failed, so sadly she's had to be culled. I'd only had her a year and she was a super layer (aren't they always the ones) and a cheeky madam - forever escaping to join me picking berries etc.
    RIP Nora Batty x

Sorry Sue, such a shame. RIP Nora, sounds like she had a good little life though. Good luck with your CL - and yours Richmondhens.

Well she's still with us and eating and looking healthy till she tries to move then her balance goes completely. Legs still moving but I'm really not hopeful. I just hope the vets right and it isn't Mareks.

At least she's eating and looking bright. My CL is on the way out I'm certain. I've syringed antibiotics into her 3 times today as she won't drink or eat but she is v weak now and struggling to breathe (she's got myco unfortunately).

We had a rabbit die suddenly last weekend, then the CL I think is going tonight. And I've just spent a half hour search in raging gale and rain looking for a lost cockerel (we moved his pen today and he got confused and wouldn't go into the new pen and to bed with the others). As I type this OH has just walked in and said he found him perched on a gate so he's been put back in the hen house with his pals.

Well she's still with us this morning! Eating blackberries and wet bread with grit and yoghurt! Not an ideal diet but it's the only way I can think of to get fluids in her. I'm syringing about 5 ml of water each time she has antibiotics. Not looking good though as she won't weight-bear even though her legs are moving.
Hope your girl makes it Sally. it doesn't seem a good time for Legbars Glad your cockerel turned up!

Glad to hear your girl is still with you. She may yet surprise you and pull through. Mine died in the night as I thought she would.

My legbar has now gone Over the weekend she became a classic victim of Mareks and confirmed by the vet this morning so pts. She was still eating and drinking but couldn't get herself to the water without falling over so I really couldn't let her suffer any more. RIP Beanie
Feeling pretty grot today as she had been in the pen with all my youngsters including her sister and the ones I hatched earlier in the year. I really can't face culling the whole lot so have decided to just wait and see.
