Mine are twerps. I've just had to fish Cookie out of the horse bucket (again) to get her to bed. And my blue hen just loves sunbathing stretched flat on her side so that I have heart attacks thinking the darned thing is dead. The babies are really hyper but seem to settle better when adult thank goodness.
GB..I know just what you mean about them flying out, its like they've been shot out of a cannon, so funny.

Betty took 'her' week old chicks into the field for the first time yesterday....my normally laid back, caring mom was running around like a headless chicken after the chicks!!( ...maybe not quite the right situation to use that phrase!!!)

Mind you- we have geese in the field and I've been a bit worried they may accidentally step on one of the chicks- or give them a corrective nip- and see them off...perhaps being super duper jet fuelled speedy chicks may actually be a blessing!...time will tell.

Hello, picking up the thread - on the subject of when will a hen first lay an egg, does anyone have any idea about sabelpoots? Nancy is 20 weeks old and still with some quills on her head, ie I think that some of her feathers have yet to grow there..any idea IH?.....and another thing, my banties are in really heavy moult this year, some have big areas that are just quills, no feathers, looks and feels weird!!

Some of my banties do that JM - feels like picking up a hedgehog! Mine moulted after brooding so at the moment most of them are fully feathered and laying (well apart from the usual nestboxful of broodies that is). One of my LF Welsummers is also doing a good hedgehog impression at the moment. Glad the sun has come out again as I think she was pretty cold last weekend when we had horizontal rain etc.

..yes! it feels exactly like picking up a hedgehog! Glad I'm not the only one with birds in heavy moult. Starngely enough one of mine laid an egg yesterday - I suspect the old english game who's only had a very light moult. Do you give them extra vits RH?

No. I do sometimes give them a bit of extra corn if it's chilly but that's it. As long as their basic health is good they should be able to cope with the moult pretty well.

I think they're ok. Their combs are still a bit pale since brooding though.
