  • Borderway Poultry Sale, Carlisle (18 Sept)

Just got an email about this. You can download the catalogue here: Seventeenth annual show and sale of rare and minority breeds

Anyone going? We had a disasterous auction last time, horribly outbid on everything! I quite fancy going again though, just in case we manage to get a bargain!

What are you after? Anything specific or just want to see if anything takes your fancy? Don't buy anything that is in less than perfect health as you may find you are bringing home more than just the bird ..................!

We are going. Promised myself that I wont buy anything though. Prices can get a bit crazy though. My daughter took a fancy to a buff sussex last time we went. That wont cost me much I remember saying.......................... £38!!

Still - its a good day out. This sale has the added attraction of sheep llamas and other non-poultry stuff. I'll not be bidding for those lots!!

Am going to look at Vorwerks and Barnevelders (but there are some Lemon Cuckoo Orps, and Silver Duckwing Welsummers that have caught my eye) plus I'm on the lookout for a white Runner duck female...

Oh yes, well versed now in spotting those little telltale signs of poorly hens at auction

We always set up quarantine crates etc up in the garage before we go anyway, just in case!

As always, we'll set ourself a realistic budget, and won't go past it. That's why we came home empty handed last time!!

We went earlier in the year and I was amazed and shocked at the prices, tbh, so if they are the same this time, looking is all I'll be doing!

Besides, most of those breeds have a good few lots in anyway!

Mr OWG has made a good point too... there is no point in us getting the Silver Duckwing Welsummers unless we bring in a SD Welsummer cockerel, and given that we've already got 7 boys (4 Welsummer ones!); we're a bit short of room for more boys, so they could be off the list already!!

We hatched 4 Barnevelders earlier in the year, and I was thinking of increasing my flock, as I want to hatch and sell some next year...

                We never even got there

Spent all weekend trying to sort out the run so the chickens weren't swimming. We've had about 6 inches of rain in 2 days, which has turned everything into 6 inches of mud

                2 CL's for £20 doesn't seem bad though!
