  • RIP Chuckles

My old Speckledy hen died overnight.
She was the last one of my original 6 - five of which were stolen a few years ago. She must have been in the far corner of the hut and the thieves missed her. She lived with us at home over the winter and then I got 12 ex-batts plus an Amber link to live with Chucky. Again she was left when thieves stole my pure breeds last year!
I noticed she was a bit breathless on Tuesday night but was out and about yesterday and laid her last egg. At bedtime she wasn't bothered about any corn - unheard of - so I brought her home to take to the vet this morning. However I didn't think she'd make it as her comb was turning a purply tinge and she was very breathless.
A lovely big hen both in personality and size, she'll be sadly missed.
    RIP Chucky xx

(((((hugs))))) funny how they make their way into your heart, even if they are 'only chickens'

Thats so sad Sue. But it show she was ment to be with you, it also shows she was loved, looked after and she was a luck chook to be with you. For an ex-batt...the alternative isn't worth thinking about. R.I.P Chucky. xxx

Sad for you, but I love to hear of hens living out their lives with those who love them.

In anticipation of getting a couple more laying hybrids (lost another 3 weeks ago with prolapse and a POL CL with Mareks ) I tried to integrate the council evictees in with the other Warrens - they've been in adjacent runs for over a month! Blood was spilt and that was when they were free-ranging! Will persevere and then try and source another Speckledy or maybe 2 or maybe ..................something else! Not sure yet - Chucky is a hard act to follow - always a lady but NEVER bullied by anyone.
