we have had our 10 chooks now since the spring, and all that time we have had a problem with one laying soft eggs, sometimes the right shape but no outer hard shell,we have had 8/9 each day....but on tuesday and thursday we had 10 perfect eggs,i had to go back and recount to make sure, but they finally did it,they got a treat of hot cheapo rice for that(thats their fav),just as i was saying to OH that they might stop laying for a while come winter, they go the other way....our birds are now going into their second winter, will they always stop laying,or just not as many,as last year they all (6 at the time) layed nonstop, very few days when we didnt get an egg off each.

They'll most likely reduce in number rather than stop altogether especially if (or rather when) they moult. The best layers usually only stop for a very short time during moult and also re-feather very quickly. My only black rock looks very tatty but has yet to stop laying and she's over 3 years old!
