  • Attack on my Little Hen

Oh dear, my poor Little Hen

After her first rubbish introduction with the big flock, I moved her in with my Barnevelder babies (who aren't really babies). She had really settled in with them.

This week, I moved all of them in with the big flock (5 birds). Things were going ok. Apart from a bit of pushing and shoving, the big flock were generally ignoring the newbies. Every night, I went and put them on the perches with the rest of the birds, and they were fine.

Yesterday, I got home from work and went to check the birds, and Little Hen had blood all over the back of her head and neck and was standing in a corner of the run

She was covered in mud, I'm assuming from being pushed over/stood on etc and wet through.

I've removed her, put her in a nice warm 'hospital' box in the garage, cleaned her head up and bathed her. Her head wound is only about half a cm, and has scabbed up nicely overnight. I left her a heat lamp overnight, and she is now warm and dry, and eating/drinking fine.

She is a little Welsummer, who is coming up to 23 weeks. She is nowhere near coming into lay, very light in weight (although she eats pretty well). She is free of lice/mites, and was wormed 2 weeks ago.

I don't think, even when she has recovered she can go back in with the big flock

I'm currently trying to find her a nice home with a smaller flock (say 2 or 3 birds) rather than my 19 harridans!

If I cant do this, I'll pop her in with one of our Roo's and they can make a nice married couple....

Bless her! My Welsummer is the bully in my lot. She terrorises the bantam Orps but she's actually the lowest in the pecking order despite being miles bigger than the rest! Your girl deserves a nice gentle roo to snuggle up to!

Three of my other girls are Welsummers, however they are hugely fluffy 'matrons' with a complete no-nonsense attitude! I suspect they probably led the attack....
