  • Wrinkly eggs

I occasionally get a wrinkly egg from my chookers, they all eat the same diet of, wild bird seed, pellets, kitchen scraps, garden titbits so dont think they are deficient in anything, oh and they also get a bit of grit and oyster shell, just hoping to shed some light on it ?

Are they old girls? One of my ex-batts laid them wrinkly from when she arrived. They tasted fine although I was the only one in the family who would eat them!

Its usually associated with a previous bout of infectious bronchitis if it looks a bit like a walnut? Apparently it can damage the shell gland(?) giving rise to wrinkly eggs. If its just a ridge it can be due to a shock during the laying time. I have an ex-batt who always lays these huge walnut looking eggs!

They are fine to eat. As Sue says, wrinkly shells are a sign of IB infection, but you can get the occasional wrinkly shell in hens that are just old or coming to the end of their laying period.

Certainly do MrsT! They're usually really big too but as she's an ex-batt the shells are quite fragile so I don't put them in boxes for other folk

If they're hybrids they could have been infected in the hatchery. Even though they're vaccinated they can still get infections.
