  • Laying question

When do they lay eggs - or can it be throughout the day?

I notice mine never go back into the coop during the day if they're in the run.

I'd rather keep them in the run until they lay, if that's possible (whenever they do start to - mate who has some from same batch just started to lay!) as I really don't want to trawl around two gardens that they roam in to find eggs, or find that the little one was stamped on it or something

    TIA!

It's back to that piece of string Chis!!! (ie How long is....!) The laying cycle is between 24 and 26 hours. Therefore in theory they COULD lay the same time every day. Most of mine seem to lay in the mornings u to lunch time but there are nearly always 1 or 2 there later on in the day. If you give them a cosy nesting area within the coop they'll generally go back there to lay. That said there are always variations especially the breeds who go broody at the drop of a hat and will find a hidey hole to lay in ready to brood them! My hybrids tend to go back to their own coop to lay but I did have one who laid 11 eggs at the back of a fence panel and then went broody in the coop! Didn't find the eggs for a few weeks!

Agree with Sue. Mine can lay any time of day although most do it in the morning. When I used to have my bantams free ranging totally they laid the eggs all over the place. Now I am much stricter and keep them in a large enclosure with their wings clipped, although there is always one or other who gets out now and again.

To encourage your hens to lay in the nestbox get some fake eggs and put them in the nestbox to start giving them the idea that that is where they lay. Once they are in a regular laying pattern you can remove the fake eggs.
