  • Anyone want chick crumb?

After my 2 failed attempts at hatching this year, I still have a bag of crumb unopened and nearly out of date (31/12/10)

Can anyone make use of it?

I don't really want to give it to my laydee's, so anyone want it?
I'm in Huntingdon PE29 area, so if you can collect it - you can have it.

Try PMing Petal - she may be near you. Failing that, mix it in with your Hens' regular rations, rather than waste it. I did that with my 'Waterfowl Pellets' that the Geese wouldn't eat!

I would just add a bit each time to their layers pellets. They love it and I imagine the extra protein in cold weather will do them good.

I fed my old stuff to the wild birds cos I was a bit concerned about the coccythingymejibby in it...although on reflection, as my chicks free-ranged with the layers from 1 week it was a bit of a free for all with who ate what!

Kind offer sheena- hope someone takes you up on it ( if you don't decide to feed them to your gals)

You shouldn't feed the medicated crumb to laying hens, but if they are not laying at the moment it won't matter. If they don't want to eat it dry, make it into a mash with some poultry spice. I'm sure they'll eat it then.

We mixed ours into a hot mash with boiling water and a sprinkle of poultry spice - they loved it on cold mornings. It does expand quite a bit and you need a surprising amount of water. It's funny just how hot they'll eat it.

Is that because they are daft or because they don't mind burned tongues?

LOLOLOL Bit of both I suspect, but they really love hot stuff on very cold days. They're getting hot couscous just now. No nutritional value really, but they do love it. Sometimes they get it just before bedtime and it sets them up for the cold frosts overnight.

I have tried them on a porridge like mixture but they turned their beaks up, even when I put a bit of demerara sugar and some raisins in it.

Is it medicated chick crumb? If not - feed it as mash to your girls, they will love it. Huntingdon might not be cost effective in petrol for me to collect ?I could put it to good use otherwise!!!!our silkies have hatched more babies, they have no business doing that in winter, I told them!!
