Quick worming query

I want to worm my chickens - and have been reading about it online. I've discovered from various sites that (with Flubernvet) it needs to be their sole food for the worming period.

Does that mean then, that I need to stop them eating grass/weeds? Or just stop any treats (which to be honest, is probably once a week, or once every two weeks now anyway - if I forgot to cook some extra rice/what not).

Mix it in with their pellets as per the pack instructions. They can feed ad lib on the pellets and you can still give them a small (one handful) treat at the very end of the day. Grazing and pecking at other greenery while free ranging is fine. Just don't fill them up on loads of other stuff so they don't want their pellets.

Just looking at the 1% stuff.. You can get the dosage down to 2kg, but assum,ing my 3 birds eat 125g of pellets a day, over the course of a week thats 2.6Kg of pellets, should I go up to 5kg, or try and work it out to 3kg of pellets to dose them with?

A few sites suggest mixing it with sunflower oil first, then mixing in with pellets.. is this alright to do?

It's probably easier to work it out to the nearest kilo, ie 3 kilos for 3 birds (each bird should consume roughly a kilo a week, dependent on their day to day lifestyle, ie penned or free range - free rangers generally eat less than those penned up). It doesn't matter if the treated feed is not all consumed by the end of the 7 day period, just keep feeding it till it's used up. It won't harm them if they get dosed for 8 or 9 days instead.

It's fine to mix a little oil or water in to help the powder stick if you wish. It doesn't affect the medication.

how many chooks do you have??...3???...my way is much less of a fuss!!

I give my flubenvet in a sultana or raisin at night when they are all lined up in the coop. Takes about 2 mins to do 12 birds! each evening for a week.

A least you know they've all had their full dose!

I tend to make one spare one-sometimes the previous chook tries to have seconds!!!!

Nicos - what do you do put the small meausre 5/6g in a bowl and dip a raisen in it?

I split open the raisin, shove it inside and close it again.Mine are bantams so the dose is less- so I do them all the same and give my Marans 3. The peacock got 8 cos I couldn't weigh him!
Just pick out the largest fruit and roll it between your finger and thumb to soften it and slice it with a sharp knife.
I used to feed it to them during the day and ended up like Benny Hill- on one occasion one of my greedy gals- Alice- managed to scoff 3x her dose!!..and nope- she didn't drop dead!
-yup- t'was my OH who came up with the simple idea of a bed-time treat!

Good idea, I have always given a morning dose on a piece of grape, but some aren't as forward or as fast!

Tried that once. One got 2!

Now I mix it in with the pellets as per leaflet.

Nicos, do you split the 7 day dose into days, or just dab a bit in of the 7 day dosage each morning?

out of interest, does anyone know the cheapest place for fluenvet at the moment, sure I pay £17 in the local shop?

We always get it on line. Google it and see who is offering the best deal. We've used vet medic and vet uk in the past.
