  • Lets see your snowy hen pics

My hens are NOT impressed with this wet stuff. It was rather funny watching them coming out the coop this morning. The ones at the front were trying to stop and turn round but the ones behind just kept coming.

Cue big heap of annoyed hens at the bottom!

We have had snow for a week now, but rather than getting loads more, what we have has frozen solid as an icy layer all over, so the birds can't get access to what's underneath. In addition we have absolutely freezing east winds (well gales really, rough enough to blow wheelbarrows and bins about, annoyingly) which makes it feel about minus 10!!! Some of mine have not even come out today. I've moved feeders as close to the houses as possible and been breaking the ice on the drinking buckets, but they re-freeze very quickly. Just as well there is a bit of snow so the chooks can nibble on that if they get thirsty.

The bantams are funny though. They are all out in their enclosure, hiding behind a hedge, and all piled up in one heap. Every now and then one breaks free to go to the feeder, or inside to lay (yes they are still laying) and then rejoins the group.

Please balls or black plastic baubles to keep the water from freezing
